Genset and tank fuel monitoring at a central bank branch
How the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Ibadan branch replaced dipsticks and hour-based estimates with measured fuel data on four Cummins gensets and their tanks — cutting fuel costs by 16%.

A central bank branch on backup power
The Central Bank of Nigeria’s Ibadan branch links headquarters with financial institutions in southern Nigeria, supporting on-site regulation, supervision, cash distribution and other core operations. Uninterrupted power is mission-critical: any failure affects payment systems and can cause significant financial losses.

Dipsticks and run-hour estimates
Four Cummins gensets — C1100 D5B (1,029 kVA), C500 D5 (500 kVA) and a C110 D5 (100 kVA) among them — run in a generator hall, fed from four external tanks of 42,000 L, 2× 26,000 L and 400 L.
Tank levels were checked by dipstick and consumption estimated from run hours — approximate methods with no reliable view of real consumption or fuel remaining. The bank needed accurate tank monitoring to prevent theft and reliable accounting of what each generator actually burns.

Every tank and every engine measured
Each tank has a DUT-E fuel level sensor measuring level and volume with better than 1% accuracy. Consumption and run time come from flow meters: a DFM D differential flow meter on the backup generator and pairs of DFM Marine meters on supply and return lines of the others.
All components connect via J1939/S6 with standard cabling. A MasterCAN Display shows key fuel data on site, and a CANUp Genset gateway sends everything to a cloud monitoring service with drain and refuelling alerts and reports.
The bank sees accurate real-time consumption for each genset, gets alerts for drains and refuels, and plans refuelling precisely — tank draining has been eliminated, downtime risk minimised and fuel delivery optimised. Fuel costs fell by 16%. The bank plans to roll the system out to gensets at other branches — more than 100 units in total.
Task → Solution → Result
No real fuel data
Dipstick tank checks and run-hour estimates on four mission-critical gensets.
DUT-E + DFM + CANUp Genset
Level sensors in every tank, flow meters on every engine, local display and cloud alerts.
−16% fuel costs
Drains eliminated; rollout to 100+ gensets at other branches planned.
