The challenge

Construction and road-building machinery burns significant amounts of diesel — often far from base, with multiple operators, around the clock. Fuel theft on unattended construction sites is one of the most common and hardest-to-detect losses in fleet operations. At the same time, without data on actual consumption, it’s impossible to set accurate fuel norms or identify which machines are overconsuming.

Wagencontrol provides hardware solutions for GPS tracking platforms that give fleet managers full visibility over construction equipment: how much fuel each machine consumes, when the tank was drained or refueled, how long the engine ran at idle versus under load, and where the machine was at any given moment.

Monitored parameters

  • Instantaneous fuel flow rate in engine lines
  • Total fuel consumption per machine / shift / period
  • Fuel level in tank — current volume
  • Refueling and draining events with volume and time
  • Fuel temperature
  • Engine operating hours — total and by mode
  • Time in Idle / Optimal / Overload modes
  • Coolant temperature, oil pressure (via CAN)
  • CO₂ emission volume — total and hourly
  • Position and operating time of working attachments
  • Fuel consumption by individual equipment components
  • Vibration and mechanical loads
  • Electrical system parameters
  • Engine start / stop, power on / off
  • Refueling or draining detected
  • Axle overload
  • Geofence entry / exit
  • Tampering alerts

What the system gives you

Up to 50% reduction in fuel losses

Precise measurement of actual consumption vs reported consumption reveals over-consumption and theft immediately. Fuel norm correction based on real data — not estimates — reduces the gap between what’s spent and what’s recorded.

Full engine visibility without wiring changes

CANCrocodile reads J1939 data from the CAN bus contactlessly, without cutting any wires or affecting warranty. Engine hours, load modes, diagnostic codes — all available in your GPS platform within minutes of installation.

Hardware and applications

Hardware for construction equipment

The system is built around Wagencontrol sensors that integrate with any GPS tracking platform via standard interfaces (CAN J1939/71, J1708, RS-485, Bluetooth).

Core hardware for construction equipment:

  • DUT-E — fuel level sensor, permanent tank control
  • DFM — inline fuel flow meter, 0.5–180,000 L/h
  • DUT-E GSM — combined fuel level + GPS/GSM in one device, ideal for remote sites
  • CANCrocodile — contactless CAN bus and J1708 reader
  • MasterCAN — SAE J1939/FMS signal converter
  • GNOM — axle load sensor for dump trucks and heavy loaders

Applicable machinery types

  • Excavators
  • Bulldozers
  • Graders
  • Front-end loaders
  • Mini loaders
  • Dump trucks
  • Truck cranes
  • Telescopic handlers
  • Aerial work platforms
  • Asphalt pavers
  • Road rollers
  • Cold planers
  • Concrete mixers
  • Concrete pumps
  • Drilling rigs
  • Compressors
  • Diesel generators on site
