Remote fuel management for bank generators
How an energy consulting firm gave bank clients in Nigeria remote control of their 810 kVA CAT generators — with fuel savings of up to 30%.

Fuel management for bank networks
The company provides energy consulting and fuel management to help clients cut fuel costs and improve efficiency. Its banking clients run large networks of diesel generators — in a region with frequent grid outages, generators keep transactions and security systems online.

Many generators, many start times, no visibility
The bank sites use CAT 810 kVA generators (50 Hz, 1,500 rpm) burning 90.9 L/h at 50% load and 171.7 L/h at full load. Each unit starts at different times and consumes fuel at different rates, which makes a fleet of remote generators hard to keep track of.
The client wanted run hours, fuel consumption in every engine mode, battery voltage, temperatures, power quality and RPM — remotely and in real time — to cut maintenance costs and prevent fuel theft.

Differential flow meters with CAN
DFM 500D differential flow meters with CAN interface report supply and return flow separately, net engine consumption and fuel temperature in real time, ready in litres or gallons — about 99% measurement accuracy. Each meter records engine operating modes and runs self-diagnostics that detect interference and prevent theft.
Online reports and a virtual dashboard show consumption, engine hours, generator power, battery voltage and RPM, with e-mail notifications on sudden changes.
The client now controls each generator’s working conditions, fuel economy and theft risk remotely — no site visit needed to check fuel, load or battery voltage. Real-time performance data reduces sudden downtime and maintenance costs, and fuel economy improved by up to 30% — up to $1,100 per month.
Task → Solution → Result
Remote generators, no data
Bank sites with large CAT gensets starting unpredictably, with theft and maintenance risk.
DFM 500D CAN + online reports
Net consumption, modes, temperature and generator parameters, remotely and in real time.
Up to 30% fuel savings
Less downtime, lower maintenance costs, up to $1,100 saved monthly.
Fuel usage monitoring with inbuilt DFM fuel flow meters allows the client to save good money and take full control of equipment. Reporting on fuel usage and generator’s operation in real time via Internet, notifies on generator’s malfunctions, draining and refilling of fuel, consumption tampering via SMS and e-mail – all this allows us to set up really profitable solution for a client.
